Futures — Intraday Margin Requirements

Intraday Futures Margin and Futures Options Hours

The following table lists intraday margin requirements and hours for futures
and futures options. Each day at ‘Intraday End Time’ the futures contract
will revert back to the full overnight margin requirement until the
‘Intraday Start Time’ the next day. Margin requirements will always be
applied at 100% for spread transactions. If an account holds futures,
futures options for US products, or future and index options for European
products on the same underlying, intraday margin does not apply.

The story of a (Slack)bot

A (not so) long time ago, a team called Tiny Speck built an app to communicate with each other as they worked.
In their daily work, they found that there were some mindless tasks they had to do over and over. These things pulled them out of important conversations, which slowed them down.

So, they built a special user in their messaging app: not a human user, but a digital user. The digital user took on some of their mindless tasks and integrated the other apps they used into their conversations.

Eventually their app was named Slack and their digital user, Slackbot.
And lo, you can build a Slack Bot, too! With our API and this nifty repository, a bot for your team can be all yours.

Using Botkit for Custom Bots

  1. Fork this project.

  2. Open up your favorite terminal app, and clone your new repository to your local computer.

  3. This is a Node.js project, so you’ll need to install the various dependencies by running:
    npm install

  4. Edit to give your bot a name and update the GitHub URLs to reflect the location of your fork in GitHub.

  5. Once you’ve clicked “Add integration,” you’ll be taken to a page where you can further customize your bot. Of importance is the bot token—take note of it now.

  6. Once you have the token, you can run your bot easily:

    TOKEN=xoxb-your-token-here npm start

    Your bot will now attempt to log into your team, and you should be able talk to it. Try telling your new bot “hello”. It should say “Hello!” back!

  7. Botkit is structured around event listeners. The most important is the “hear” listener, which kicks off an action when your bot hears something. contains the core logic, and has this event listener:

    controller.hears('hello','direct_message', function(bot,message) {
        bot.reply(message, 'Hello!');
    });

    This event handler is triggered when the bot receives a direct message from a user that contains the word “hello.”

    The bot responds in the direct message with, “Hello!”

  8. You can listen to any kind of message or you can configure your bot to only listen to direct messages or specific @-mentions of your bot. It’s up to you! To start let’s re-write the event listener to be more flexible about the greetings it is listening for:

    controller.hears('hello', 'hi', 'greetings', 'direct_mention', 'mention', 'direct_message', function(bot,message) {
         bot.reply(message, 'Hello!');
     });

    Now our bot will respond any time it sees “hello,” “hi,” or “greetings” in either a DM or a message that @-mentions the bot. (Don’t forget to restart your bot after each edit!)

Futures Margin

Note that for commodities including futures, single-stock futures and futures options, margin is the amount of cash a client must put up as collateral to support a futures contract. For securities, margin is the amount of cash a client borrows.

Futures margin trading in an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is subject to substantially higher margin requirements than in a non-IRA margin account. Margin rates in an IRA margin account may meet or exceed twice the overnight futures margin requirement imposed in a non-IRA margin account.

Margin requirements for futures are set by each exchange.

Understanding the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT)

The NYBOT is focused on physical commodities such as coffee, cotton, and cocoa. By allowing these commodities to be traded indirectly using futures contracts, institutions such as the NYBOT allow the producers and buyers of these commodities to lock in prices ahead of time in order to protect against unforeseen volatility or production shortages.

With standardized futures contracts, companies dependent on these commodities can buy them at predetermined prices for later delivery weeks, months, or even years in the future. In doing so, they can be more certain of the cost of their raw materials, regardless of how the spot prices of those commodities may fluctuate in the interim period. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) plays a similar role, facilitating futures trading in commodities such as livestock, metals, and crude oil.

When the NYBOT was founded in 1870, trading was conducted exclusively by humans, often working on large and loud trading floors. In 1997, the NYBOT acquired the Coffee, Sugar, and Cocoa Exchange (CSCE), increasing their foothold in the commodity trading marketplace. This combined entity was then purchased by the ICE in 2006.

Quick examples

Send text on or command:

bot.on('/start', '/hello', (msg) => msg.reply.text('Welcome!'));

When sticker received, reply back:

bot.on('sticker', (msg) => {
    return msg.reply.sticker('http://i.imgur.com/VRYdhuD.png', { asReply: true });
});

Sends photo on «show kitty» or «kitty» text message (using RegExp):

bot.on(/(show\s)?kitty*/, (msg) => {
    return msg.reply.photo('http://thecatapi.com/api/images/get');
});

Command with arguments :

bot.on(/^\/say (.+)$/, (msg, props) => {
    const text = props.match1;
    return bot.sendMessage(msg.from.id, text, { replyToMessage: msg.message_id });
});

When message was edited:

bot.on('edit', (msg) => {
    return msg.reply.text('I saw it! You edited message!', { asReply: true });
});

Note: is a bot method shortcut, part of shortReply build-in plugin.

Real World Example of the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT)

A few years after the ICE acquired the NYBOT, the traditional trading floors were closed off so that all trades would be executed electronically. Today, the ICE operates as an entirely electronic exchange, enabling near-instant transactions among market participants throughout the world.

This move toward digitization has also corresponded with a vast increase in the size of the commodities trading markets themselves. As its name suggests, the ICE is a truly international marketplace in which traders can transact in commodities ranging from electricity and jet fuel to derivative products based on interest rates, currency values, and various other underlying assets.

Futures Margin

Futures margin requirements are based on risk-based algorithms. All margin requirements are expressed in the currency of the traded product and can change frequently. Risk-based margin algorithms define a standard set of market outcome scenarios with a one-day time horizon. A price scanning range is defined for each product by the respective clearing house.

Trader Workstation (TWS)

Traders can adjust the default RTH setting in the TWS as follows;

1.  Select the Edit menu followed by Global Configuration at the top of the main TWS screen.

2. On the left side of the window that appears, click the «+» next to the word Presets to expand the section.

2.  Next, select the product type (Stocks, Futures, etc.) by clicking on the word so that it is highlighted.

3.  In the Primary Order section, be sure the Order Type is set to LMT. (if MKT or STP is set as the default the RTH setting will not be applicable).

4.  In the Timing section, check the box that says «Allow order to be activated, triggered, or filled outside of regular trading hours».

5.  Click Apply and then OK at the bottom of the window.

6.  Orders that support modification of the RTH restriction (for the product selected in step #1) will be created with the new default applied.

What Is the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT)?

Founded in 1870, the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) is a commodity futures exchange located in New York. In 2006, it became part of the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).

For much of its history, the NYBOT facilitated commodities trading using human traders in large trading floors, or «pits.» Today, the vast majority of this trading is conducted through computers.

  • The New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) is a commodity futures exchange that today forms part of the ICE since 2006.
  • NYBOT previously specialized in physical commodities such as sugar and coffee, but has become all-electronic since incorporation into the ICE.
  • The NYBOT is one of the oldest asset exchanges in the U.S., dating back to 1870.

Disclaimer

  • Zenbot is NOT a sure-fire profit machine. Use it AT YOUR OWN RISK.
  • Crypto-currency is still an experiment, and therefore so is Zenbot. Meaning, both may fail at any time.
  • Running a bot, and trading in general requires careful study of the risks and parameters involved. A wrong setting can cause you a major loss.
  • Never leave the bot un-monitored for long periods of time. Zenbot doesn’t know when to stop, so be prepared to stop it if too much loss occurs.
  • Often times the default trade parameters will underperform vs. a buy-hold strategy, so run some simulations and find the optimal parameters for your chosen exchange/pair before going «all-in».

Risk Margin Overview

What is risk based margining?

A risk based margin system evaluates your portfolio to set your margin requirements. The risk valuations of your positions are created using simulated market movements that anticipate possible outcomes. As a result, a more accurate margin model is created, allowing the investor to increase their leverage.

How are correlated risks offset?

Within a group of positions with the same underlying, 100% of the gain at any one valuation point is allowed to offset another positions loss at the same valuation point.

Example: An account holds a long stock position in stock ABC and a long put option contract in ABC. If a theoretical worst case scenario causes the underlying asset to drop 15%, then the loss that on the long stock position would be offset by the gain on the long put position.

What positions are eligible?

All positions in margin equity securities (including foreign equity securities and options on foreign equity securities, listed options on an equity security or index of equity securities, security futures products, unlisted derivatives on an equity security or index of equity securities, warrants on an equity security or index of equity securities, broad-based index futures, and options on broad-based index futures.
